Engineering Manager interview prep for Amazon.

Software Development Managers (SDMs) at Amazon are responsible for overall product delivery, operational health, architectural standards, and team talent development. The interview loop rigorously assesses technical leadership without micromanaging code, hiring and developing the best, managing through ambiguity, and leading blameless post-mortem operational excellence.

WHAT INTERVIEWERS ARE LOOKING FOR

Signals to make easy to see.

Use your examples and technical answers to surface these strengths. You do not need to force every signal into every response.

01

Hire and Develop the Best (Attracting top engineering talent, continuous performance coaching, elevating the bar)

02

Operational Excellence & Incident Management (COEs / Correction of Errors, on-call health, MTTR reduction)

03

Technical Judgment & High-Level System Design (Scoping architectures, technical debt trade-offs, roadmap execution)

04

Ownership & Customer Obsession (Working backwards from customer needs, PR/FAQ writing, prioritization)

A strong practice outcome

A comprehensive organizational roadmap, PR/FAQ initiative, and operational Correction of Errors (COE) analysis calibrated to Amazon SDM expectations.

A PRACTICAL PREPARATION PLAN

Practise the loop in the right order.

This plan gives you enough structure to prepare steadily while leaving room to adapt to your current experience and interview date.

  1. 01

    PR/FAQ & Working Backwards Mastery

Practice writing customer-centric product press releases, internal FAQs, and executive strategy documents.

  2. 02

    Operational Excellence & COE Drills

Formulate 5-Whys root cause analyses and remediation plans for complex distributed systems outages.

  3. 03

    Leadership Principles Behavioral Bank

Prepare 10–12 quantified STAR narratives demonstrating talent development, managing underperformance, and decisive leadership.

  4. 04

    High-Level Architectural Systems Review

Practice system design evaluations focusing on failure isolation, capacity planning, and business SLA alignment.

INTERVIEW PROCESS

How the Amazon loop usually unfolds.

The number and order of rounds can vary by team, level, and location. Use this as a preparation map, not a guarantee.

01

Online Assessment (OA)

30–90 min
Round 1
Amazon process

How to prepare: A 90-minute online test with around 20 MCQs (with negative marking) on quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, and CS fundamentals, plus 2 coding problems. Many candidates also get a work-simulation module that drops them into a mock workday of team emails and task threads to assess judgment and prioritization.

02

Technical Interview Round 1

30–90 min
Round 2
Amazon process

How to prepare: A coding-focused round covering data structures and algorithms (arrays, strings, trees, graphs, dynamic programming). The interviewer expects a working, optimized solution with clear discussion of time and space complexity, and usually includes at least one Leadership Principle-based behavioral question.

03

Technical Interview Round 2

30–90 min
Round 3
Amazon process

How to prepare: A second DSA/coding round, often paired with an in-depth discussion of the candidate's projects or resume. May include basic system design or object-oriented design questions for entry-level roles, alongside more Leadership Principle behavioral questions.

04

Bar Raiser Round

30–90 min
Round 4
Amazon process

How to prepare: Conducted by a senior Amazonian from outside the hiring team, specifically trained to keep the hiring bar consistent across the company. Mixes deep technical questions with detailed STAR-format behavioral questions mapped to specific Leadership Principles.

05

HR / Leadership Principles Round

30–90 min
Round 5
Amazon process

How to prepare: Final round focused almost entirely on behavioral and situational questions testing alignment with Amazon's 16 Leadership Principles, along with compensation, location preferences, and overall fit.

PRACTISE THE QUESTIONS BEHIND THE LOOP

Questions worth rehearsing aloud.

These examples test the kind of clarity a engineering manager needs to show. Use them to practise your structure, not to memorise a script.

A COE is a structured, blameless operational document detailing a production failure. It includes: what happened, customer impact (metrics, duration), timeline of events, root cause analysis using the 5 Whys methodology, and actionable preventive items. As an SDM, lead the meeting with zero tolerance for finger-pointing; focus entirely on why automated monitors, canary rollouts, or integration tests failed to catch the issue. Every corrective action must be concrete, assigned to a specific owner with a committed due date, and audited periodically to ensure the systemic flaw cannot recur.
