ROLE-SPECIFIC COMPANY GUIDE

Amazon interview preparation

Software Engineer interview prep for Amazon.

At Amazon, Software Development Engineers (SDEs) operate large-scale distributed services with end-to-end operational responsibility ('You build it, you run it'). The interview loop rigorously tests data structures, low-level object-oriented design, distributed system resilience, and deep behavioral alignment with Amazon's 16 Leadership Principles, evaluated under the scrutiny of an independent Bar Raiser.

WHAT INTERVIEWERS ARE LOOKING FOR

Signals to make easy to see.

Use your examples and technical answers to surface these strengths. You do not need to force every signal into every response.

01

Customer Obsession & Operational Ownership (Metrics, alarms, post-mortem rigor, blast radius containment)

02

High & Low-Level Design (SOLID principles, clean extensibility, concurrency, database partitioning)

03

Data Structures & Algorithmic Problem Solving (Trees, heaps, BFS/DFS, space/time trade-offs)

04

Leadership Principles in Action (STAR format, quantified metrics, personal contribution over 'we')

A strong practice outcome

An end-to-end architecture and coding demonstration backed by quantified behavioral narratives calibrated to Amazon's SDE bar.

A PRACTICAL PREPARATION PLAN

Practise the loop in the right order.

This plan gives you enough structure to prepare steadily while leaving room to adapt to your current experience and interview date.

  1. 01

    Leadership Principles Story Matrix

Draft 8–10 STAR stories covering Customer Obsession, Bias for Action, Ownership, Disagree & Commit, and Dive Deep with concrete metrics.

  2. 02

    Data Structures & Coding Drills

Solve medium-to-hard problems on LeetCode with emphasis on heaps, dynamic programming, graphs, and two-pointer arrays.

  3. 03

    Object-Oriented & Low-Level Design

Practice modeling real-world systems (Elevator, Parking Lot, Vending Machine, File System) adhering strictly to SOLID principles.

  4. 04

    Distributed System Design at Scale

Master AWS building blocks (DynamoDB, SQS, S3, ECS/Lambda, API Gateway) and design high-availability architectures with low blast radius.

INTERVIEW PROCESS

How the Amazon loop usually unfolds.

The number and order of rounds can vary by team, level, and location. Use this as a preparation map, not a guarantee.

01

Online Assessment (OA)

30–90 min
Round 1
Amazon process

How to prepare: A 90-minute online test with around 20 MCQs (with negative marking) on quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, and CS fundamentals, plus 2 coding problems. Many candidates also get a work-simulation module that drops them into a mock workday of team emails and task threads to assess judgment and prioritization.

02

Technical Interview Round 1

30–90 min
Round 2
Amazon process

How to prepare: A coding-focused round covering data structures and algorithms (arrays, strings, trees, graphs, dynamic programming). The interviewer expects a working, optimized solution with clear discussion of time and space complexity, and usually includes at least one Leadership Principle-based behavioral question.

03

Technical Interview Round 2

30–90 min
Round 3
Amazon process

How to prepare: A second DSA/coding round, often paired with an in-depth discussion of the candidate's projects or resume. May include basic system design or object-oriented design questions for entry-level roles, alongside more Leadership Principle behavioral questions.

04

Bar Raiser Round

30–90 min
Round 4
Amazon process

How to prepare: Conducted by a senior Amazonian from outside the hiring team, specifically trained to keep the hiring bar consistent across the company. Mixes deep technical questions with detailed STAR-format behavioral questions mapped to specific Leadership Principles.

05

HR / Leadership Principles Round

30–90 min
Round 5
Amazon process

How to prepare: Final round focused almost entirely on behavioral and situational questions testing alignment with Amazon's 16 Leadership Principles, along with compensation, location preferences, and overall fit.

PRACTISE THE QUESTIONS BEHIND THE LOOP

Questions worth rehearsing aloud.

These examples test the kind of clarity a software engineer needs to show. Use them to practise your structure, not to memorise a script.

Every behavioral interview at Amazon probes 2–3 Leadership Principles (such as Customer Obsession, Ownership, Bias for Action, Dive Deep, and Deliver Results). Prepare 6–8 distinct stories from your career using the STAR framework (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Crucially, articulate your individual contribution ('I decided', 'I built') rather than collective team actions ('we'). Quantify all results with concrete metrics—such as latency reductions, cost savings, or error rate drops. The Bar Raiser verifies that you raise the hiring bar for the level, probing deeply into trade-offs, discarded alternatives, and what you would do differently.
