Data Engineer interview prep for Infosys.

Data Engineers at Infosys architect, build, and optimize enterprise data warehouses, big data pipelines, and cloud analytics platforms for global enterprise clients. Interviews assess big data frameworks (Apache Spark, Hadoop), cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Azure Synapse), SQL tuning, data modeling, and automated ETL/ELT pipeline design.

WHAT INTERVIEWERS ARE LOOKING FOR

Signals to make easy to see.

Use your examples and technical answers to surface these strengths. You do not need to force every signal into every response.

01

Big Data Distributed Processing (Apache Spark architecture, RDDs/DataFrames, partitioning, and shuffle optimization)

02

Cloud Data Warehousing & Modeling (Snowflake, dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas, and columnar storage)

03

Advanced SQL & Data Transformation (Analytical window functions, complex joins, CTEs, and query performance tuning)

04

Data Pipeline Orchestration & Quality (Apache Airflow, automated data validation, error recovery, and backfills)

A strong practice outcome

An end-to-end cloud ETL pipeline architecture and Spark/SQL codebase demonstrating robust data ingestion, dimensional transformation, and query optimization.

A PRACTICAL PREPARATION PLAN

Practise the loop in the right order.

This plan gives you enough structure to prepare steadily while leaving room to adapt to your current experience and interview date.

  1. 01

Advanced SQL & Dimensional Data Modeling

Practice complex window functions, CTEs, star schemas, fact/dimension design, and SCD Type 2 modeling.

  2. 02

Apache Spark & Big Data Optimization

Study Spark execution architecture, DataFrame operations, shuffle reduction, and caching strategies.

  3. 03

Cloud Data Warehousing (Snowflake / Azure / AWS)

Understand virtual warehouses, micro-partitioning, external stages, and cloud data loading best practices.

  4. 04

Pipeline Orchestration & Client Project Scenarios

Design Airflow DAGs with idempotent backfills and prepare architectural walkthroughs of past client data projects.

INTERVIEW PROCESS

How the Infosys loop usually unfolds.

The number and order of rounds can vary by team, level, and location. Use this as a preparation map, not a guarantee.

01

Online Assessment Test

30–90 min
Round 1
Infosys process

How to prepare: A 95-minute test with 7 sections: puzzles, pseudocode-based logical output questions, quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, verbal ability, grammar, and a short essay. Performance here determines which track (Systems Engineer, Digital Specialist Engineer, or Specialist Programmer) a candidate is considered for.

02

Coding Round (DSE/SP tracks)

30–90 min
Round 2
Infosys process

How to prepare: For the higher Digital Specialist Engineer and Specialist Programmer tracks, a dedicated 3-hour proctored round with 3 coding problems (Easy, Medium, Hard) spanning arrays, dynamic programming, and graph problems. Solving 2 or more well often clears the bar for Specialist Programmer.

03

Technical Interview

30–90 min
Round 3
Infosys process

How to prepare: A 30-45 minute round reviewing the logic from the coding round plus CS fundamentals: OOP, DBMS, operating systems, and networking, along with an in-depth discussion of resume projects.

04

HR Interview

30–90 min
Round 4
Infosys process

How to prepare: A 15-30 minute closing round covering self-introduction, motivation for joining Infosys, a 5-year career plan, and willingness to relocate to the assigned location, typically evaluated using the STAR method.

PRACTISE THE QUESTIONS BEHIND THE LOOP

Questions worth rehearsing aloud.

These examples test the kind of clarity a data engineer needs to show. Use them to practise your structure, not to memorise a script.

1) Job Execution Hierarchy: A Spark application starts with a Driver program that translates code into a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) of execution. The DAG Scheduler divides the job into Stages based on shuffle boundaries, and each Stage is divided into Tasks executed in parallel by Executors across worker nodes; 2) Narrow Transformations: Operations where each partition of the parent RDD/DataFrame is used by at most one partition of the child (e.g., `map()`, `filter()`). Data does not need to move across cluster nodes, enabling pipelined execution within memory; 3) Wide Transformations: Operations where multiple child partitions depend on data across multiple parent partitions (e.g., `groupByKey()`, `join()`, `distinct()`). Wide transformations require an expensive Shuffle operation, transferring data across cluster network interfaces and writing temporary shuffle files to disk.
