Backend Developer interview prep for Microsoft.

Backend Engineers at Microsoft architect mission-critical cloud infrastructure, distributed microservices, and storage engines powering Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365. Interviews focus on distributed consensus, Azure cloud primitives, concurrency, database consistency, and high availability.

WHAT INTERVIEWERS ARE LOOKING FOR

Signals to make easy to see.

Use your examples and technical answers to surface these strengths. You do not need to force every signal into every response.

01

Distributed Cloud Architecture (Azure architecture, microservices, Cosmos DB consistency, storage durability)

02

High-Performance Concurrency (C# async/await, Task Parallel Library, lock-free patterns, JVM/C++ memory models)

03

Resilience & Fault Tolerance (Circuit breakers, bulkheads, disaster recovery, zero-downtime deployments)

04

Customer Obsession & Operational Health (SLAs, telemetry, root-cause troubleshooting)

A strong practice outcome

A scalable, multi-region cloud service design with complete data consistency, latency guarantees, and disaster recovery specifications.

A PRACTICAL PREPARATION PLAN

Practise the loop in the right order.

This plan gives you enough structure to prepare steadily while leaving room to adapt to your current experience and interview date.

  1. 01

    Azure Cloud Primitives & Networking

Master Azure Service Bus, Cosmos DB, Azure Blob Storage, Azure Functions, and Virtual Network peering.

  2. 02

    Concurrency & High-Throughput I/O

Deep dive into asynchronous programming (async/await, Task Parallel Library), thread pools, and non-blocking I/O.

  3. 03

    Distributed Consensus & Consistency

Understand Raft/Paxos consensus, CAP theorem, multi-region replication, and distributed locking.

  4. 04

    Resilience & Telemetry Engineering

Design automated failovers, Application Insights telemetry monitoring, rate limiters, and canary deployments.

INTERVIEW PROCESS

How the Microsoft loop usually unfolds.

The number and order of rounds can vary by team, level, and location. Use this as a preparation map, not a guarantee.

01

Online Assessment (OA)

30–90 min
Round 1
Microsoft process

How to prepare: A coding-focused online test with two coding problems and no aptitude filler, used to shortlist candidates for the interview loop.

02

Technical Phone Screen

30–90 min
Round 2
Microsoft process

How to prepare: A live coding round over video call covering data structures and algorithms, alongside early growth-mindset behavioral questions about learning from failure and handling ambiguity.

03

Onsite Technical Round 1

30–90 min
Round 3
Microsoft process

How to prepare: A data structures and algorithms round prioritizing common patterns like trees, graphs, linked lists, and dynamic programming, with interviewers often providing hints and evaluating how you respond to them.

04

Onsite Technical Round 2

30–90 min
Round 4
Microsoft process

How to prepare: A round combining coding with basic system design (such as designing a URL shortener) and behavioral questions assessing collaboration and growth mindset.

05

As Appropriate (AA) Round

30–90 min
Round 5
Microsoft process

How to prepare: A senior interviewer, often director-level, evaluates overall fit, culture add, and technical judgment holistically. This round carries significant weight in the final hiring decision, alongside a mutual assessment of team fit from the candidate's side.

PRACTISE THE QUESTIONS BEHIND THE LOOP

Questions worth rehearsing aloud.

These examples test the kind of clarity a backend developer needs to show. Use them to practise your structure, not to memorise a script.

The 5 consistency levels are: Strong (linearizable, guarantees reading latest committed write globally, highest latency, regional availability constraints); Bounded Staleness (reads lag writes by at most K versions or T time); Session (most widely used default, guarantees read-your-writes and monotonic reads within a single client session, excellent performance); Consistent Prefix (reads never see out-of-order writes); and Eventual (weakest, no ordering guarantees, highest throughput). Session consistency is optimal for shopping carts and social apps because individual users experience perfect consistency for their own actions while enjoying low latency across global replicas.
