Meta interview preparation

Software Engineer interview prep for Meta.

At Meta, Software Engineers build applications and infrastructure serving over 3 billion daily active users across Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta Quest. Coding interviews are famously fast-paced: candidates are expected to clarify, implement, and test two algorithmic problems within a single 45-minute round. In system design, candidates branch into either Product Architecture or Systems/Infrastructure tracks.

WHAT INTERVIEWERS ARE LOOKING FOR

Signals to make easy to see.

Use your examples and technical answers to surface these strengths. You do not need to force every signal into every response.

01

Speed & Algorithmic Fluency (Solving 2 LeetCode Medium/Hard problems in 45 mins with optimal Big-O)

02

Product Architecture or Infrastructure Design (TAO, distributed caching, client-server sync, sharding)

03

Clean Code Without IDE Crutches (Manual dry-running with edge cases in CoderPad)

04

Behavioral & 'Jedi' Round (Move Fast, Focus on Long-Term Impact, Be Direct, Meta Metamates Me)

A strong practice outcome

A timed, high-throughput coding performance and modular architecture design calibrated to Meta's rigorous E4/E5 hiring bar.

A PRACTICAL PREPARATION PLAN

Practise the loop in the right order.

This plan gives you enough structure to prepare steadily while leaving room to adapt to your current experience and interview date.

  1. 01

    Timed Speed Coding Drills

Drill 2 problems in 40 minutes on LeetCode Meta tagged lists focusing on Trees, Graphs (BFS/DFS), Heaps, and Monotonic Stacks.

  2. 02

Social Graph & Feed System Design

Master TAO, Memcached cache-aside patterns, feed generation, push vs pull tradeoffs, and cursor pagination under extreme QPS.

  3. 03

    Product Sense & Architectural Trade-offs

Practice end-to-end user-facing service designs (Instagram Stories, WhatsApp messaging, live comments) with clear reliability safeguards.

  4. 04

    Behavioral & Meta Cultural Values

Frame STAR stories emphasizing bias for action, fast execution, direct communication, and ownership of production issues.

INTERVIEW PROCESS

How the Meta loop usually unfolds.

The number and order of rounds can vary by team, level, and location. Use this as a preparation map, not a guarantee.

01

Recruiter Screen

30–90 min
Round 1
Meta process

How to prepare: An informal 20-30 minute call with a Meta recruiter. No technical questions here; the focus is on your background, motivation, career trajectory, and initial fit with Meta's culture (Move Fast, Be Bold, Focus on Impact).

02

Online Coding Assessment

30–90 min
Round 2
Meta process

How to prepare: A proctored online coding test with algorithmic problems to be solved within a fixed time window, used to filter candidates before the phone screen.

03

Technical Phone Screen

30–90 min
Round 3
Meta process

How to prepare: A 45-minute live coding round conducted over video call, typically covering one or two data structures and algorithms problems with an emphasis on clean, working code and clear communication.

04

Virtual Onsite - Coding Round 1

30–90 min
Round 4
Meta process

How to prepare: A data structures and algorithms round. Some candidates may instead get an AI-enabled round: a 60-minute session in a CoderPad environment with a built-in AI assistant, working through a larger real-world multi-file problem (fix a bug, build a feature, then optimize).

05

Virtual Onsite - Coding Round 2

30–90 min
Round 5
Meta process

How to prepare: A second coding round focused on data structures and algorithms, occasionally paired with a lightweight system or product design discussion depending on the role.

06

Behavioral / Culture Fit Round

30–90 min
Round 6
Meta process

How to prepare: A 45-minute interview assessing alignment with Meta's values, communication style, collaboration, and how you've handled ambiguity, conflict, and impact in past projects.

PRACTISE THE QUESTIONS BEHIND THE LOOP

Questions worth rehearsing aloud.

These examples test the kind of clarity a software engineer needs to show. Use them to practise your structure, not to memorise a script.

Allocate 18–20 minutes per problem. Minutes 0–3: actively confirm inputs, outputs, data ranges, and edge cases. Minutes 3–6: state the baseline approach and articulate the optimal data structure/algorithm with Big-O time and space complexity. Minutes 6–15: write clean, modular code without hesitation. Minutes 15–18: manually dry-run the solution against an example and check edge cases (null, empty, negative, duplicates). Transition promptly to problem 2. Finishing only one problem is generally calibrated as a Lean No Hire or No Hire at Meta.

READY FOR THE NEXT ROUND?

Practise the Meta Software Engineer interview before it counts.
